EUROPEAN FORUM: “Progressive, ecological and left forces united to build a real alternative for Europe”

In a press conference at the European Forum in Bilbao, Maite Mola (Vice-President of the Party of the European Left, Spain); Pierre Laurent (Vice-President of the Party of the European Left,

France); Benoît Hamon (Fondateur de Génération.s, France), Ernest Urtasun (MEP Greens/EFA, Spain) and Gabriele Zimmer MEP, (Chair of the GUE/NGL, Germany) declared:

The second European Forum in Bilbao falls into a historical context: On November 9th, 1938, there was the ‘Reichsprogromnacht’, during which there were violent measures against Jews, and on November 11, 1918 was the end of the first world war – 100 years ago.

These two historic dates give us the responsibility and the mandate to never again rule war and to join forces to form a broad left alliance against the new right-wing shift in Europe. The turning away from the neo-liberal austerity policy, which is carried out against the wishes of the majority of the population in Europe, is a central issue.

The defence of a Social Europe, that reinforce public services and propose a public investment in social policies, which guarantees decent housing, health, education, employment and social security for all people. In a broad consensus of progressive, ecological and lefties forces we have to build a real alternative against these anti social and militarist policies of this European Union. We are working together and we understand the need to seek cooperation to face of the antisocial, patriarchal, xenophobic, elitären policies with a broad alliance of progressive, ecologist and leftist forces in Europe.
